The Future of Language Learning
How can artificial intelligence make it easier for adults to learn a new language? This is the central focus of the Erasmus+ project The EU ABPLA (AI-Based Personal Language Assistant), in which VSKdansk leads a three-year European collaboration to develop an AI-based personal language tutor.
The project was launched in November 2025 and brings together partners from Denmark (VSKdansk), Czech Republic (Jazyková škola Zebra), Slovakia (Vages-Grow) and Belgium (Katholiek Onderwijs Vlaanderen). Together with a technical partner, the project partners will develop a digital learning assistant designed to support adult language learners both inside and outside the classroom.
Developed in Collaboration with Users
The first phase of the project has focused on a comprehensive needs analysis. Through surveys, workshops, focus groups and interviews with learners, teachers and experts across all partner countries, the project is identifying the needs and challenges that will form the basis for developing the AI solution.
For VSKdansk, it is essential that the solution is developed with the people who will use it in mind. Learners, teachers and subject-matter experts therefore play a central role throughout the development of the project.
A Learning Assistant, Not a Replacement
The goal is not simply to develop yet another AI tool, but to create a learning assistant that is pedagogically grounded, user-friendly and adapted to the different needs and circumstances of adult language learners.
The future solution is intended to complement classroom teaching, not replace it. It will give learners the opportunity to practise their language skills, receive support and continue working on their learning whenever it fits into their everyday lives.
A Project with a European Perspective
The project will run for three years, with the ambition of creating a solution that can benefit thousands of adult language learners across Europe. During the upcoming project phases, the AI assistant will be designed, developed and tested in close collaboration with users, ensuring that it is based on real needs and creates value in everyday language learning.
